Joe Brown 1930 - 2020

Saddened to hear about the death of a true British climbing hero and adventurer, Joe Brown.

Joe was a true pioneer of rock climbing and was most active in the 1950s and 1960s. His ascents were as varied in style as they were in location and ranged from the gritstone outcrops of the Peak District to 8000m peaks in the Himalaya.

The routes he put up in the UK, the Alps and the Himalaya in the '50s, '60s, and '70s were incredible.  With routes like Cenotaph Corner on Dinas Cromlech, Shrike, November,  Llithrig, Vember on Clogwyn D’ur Ardu (Cloggy), The Unconquerables at Stanage, Great slab at Froggatt Joe set a new benchmark in difficulty.

He went over to the Alps and climbed the hardest routes in Chamonix at the time in half the time.  With Don Whillans they knocked days off the fastest time up the West Face of the Dru.
In the Himalaya, he made (along with George Band) the first ascent on Kanchenjunga, at 8586m it is the third highest mountain in the world.

Originally a plumber's apprentice and a 'Jack of all trades' in Manchester, England, Joe moved to Llanberis in North Wales where he opened a climbing shop in 1966. He was made a CBE in the 2011 New Year Honours for services to rock climbing and mountaineering.

His autobiography "The Hard Years" was a text of our youth. In our hearts, Joe will continue to climb evermore.

A true legend of the climbing world has passed.

MLT Weekend

Despite what some readers may think, MLT is not a special Welsh version of a BLT (as in mutton rather than bacon) but rather an acronym for Mountain Leader Training, of which I am a MLTW course provider for the Climbing Wall Award and Single Pitch Award. Friday had me heading up the winding wintery road to Dinorwic for a MLT Course Provider Workshop day, as organised by Bry Williams, the MLTW's National Development Officer along with and Mal Creasey from the MLTE.

The day was held at Blue Peris Mountain Centre, whose head of centre, Mark ‘Baggy’ Richards, is the man behind the popular winter blog for North Wales. In fact, Baggy has been working hard with Si Panton of Ground Up on a new interim guide. North Wales Winter Climbing is due out in December, so just in time for Christmas. However, there were remarks about it being a shame it wasn't available already, considering how much snow we had to contend with :o)

Part of the day was spent catching up with MLT business and future developments, whilst the rest was spent looking at more practical issues, In this case, we strolled over to Bus Stop Quarry after donning duvet jackets and extra warm layers to discuss a number of Single Pitch Award matters including personal safety at the top of the crag as well as problem solving scenarios.

The weekend that followed saw 4 candidates present themselves for assessment, and with the assistance of Paul Poole, we managed to make the most of it, all things considered.

After meeting with Chrissy, Sam, Rebecca and Simon on Saturday morning at Pete's Eats to check over paperwork and the weather, we made our way to Holyhead Mountain on Anglesey. This is still one of the most ideal venues for examining personal climbing ability at the grade and is actually a very pleasant location. So despite Snowdonia being knee deep in snow, Anglesey was bathed in winter sunshine that took the edge of the frosty NE wind.

Sunday saw the group meet us at Lion Rock, another classic venue for to assess group management, rope systems and problem solving. A huge contrast to Friday, when snow was coming down heavily, today had a frosty feel but was actually quite warm in the sunshine. The assessment finished with a visit to the Beacon Climbing Centre. On this occasion it is pleasing to say there are now four more competent award holders in the world. Well done team :o)

MLTW Course Providers Workshop

One of the benefits of being a MLTW course provider for the Climbing Wall Award and Single Pitch Award is that I am able to attend networking events such as the recent workshop organised by Bryn Williams (MLTW) and Mal Creasey (MLTE) which was hosted at Plas Caerdeon near Barmouth.

As with all these events, it is a much about catching up with peers, colleagues and old friends as it is to learn about changes in policy and procedures. It is also a useful forum for asking questions and seeking clarification on matters of course delivery and paperwork.

In the afternoon, the day took a more educative turn with John Roberts from the Snowdonia National Park, where he works as their Archeologist, who walked us through an area around Egryn Abbey were he talked about bronze and Iron age settlements and burial grounds. It was not only stimulating in itself but relevant and useful for course providers as added information for their course participants.

........and finally, what would be a good collective noun for a group of mountain skills trainers and assessors?

Single Pitch Award Training

This was my first course as an official MLTW provider, having gained approval to be so earlier in September.

The work came about via Bryn Williams, who is one of the more active and prolific providers within Wales, when Liverpool John Moores University required extra SPA providers to service a larger than usual group of students wishing to do the award.

Day one saw us go to the ever reliable Lion Rocks to look at belay systems and rope set ups for both personal and group use including abseils. The weather held out for the most part allowing us to cover a number of systems and bring about plenty of discussion. Later that day, we went to the Beacon Climbing Centre which meant we could explore the coaching dimensions of climbing as well as group belay systems and problem solving.

Day two saw us up at Pont Y Cromlech for personal climbing and for further practice of skills from the first day. We almost managed to get things covered before the rain came in. Thankfully, we were able to retreat to Pete's Eat's for debriefs and log book signing.

Climbing Wall Award Assessment

The purpose of the assessment is to make certain that all candidates for the award have a sound understanding of both the environment in which they will operate and climbing in general.

The intention is to create an atmosphere whereby candidates can show their best in terms of personal abilities, knowledge and supervising skills.

I am happy to report that all the candidates, who where from the Outdoor Instructor Academy in Kidderminster, were successful on this occasion
